This is an excellent question and if you’re serious about earning a consistent living on YouTube then you urgently need the answer, so let me explain without further delay.

There’s a Meta study that reveals how influencers recommending products to their audience (for an unknown brand or personality) convert at 5%.

To be truly successful like the ‘one percent’ coaches… you need to understand (and optimise for) all three. 📈

So, let’s look at each part closely to ensure you fully comprehend the science and then I’ll show you how it applies to your situation.

PART ONE: BUILDING THE RELATIONSHIP

The ‘not so’ secret part.

Okay, so back in 1956, Donald Horton and Richard Wohl published the paper “Mass Communication and Para-Social Interaction: Observations on Intimacy at a Distance”. 📚

They discovered how television and radio created psychological relationships between audiences and star performers.

And despite the relationship being completely one-sided, the audience felt a similar attachment to the relationships they shared with ‘real friends’.

So, even though they weren’t meeting up for a coffee… going for walks together… discussing their day… or doing anything regular friends do…

The attachment still felt ‘intimate’ and people would plan their routines around seeing these celebrity personalities.

The study called these ‘Para-Social Relationships’ (PSR). 🥰

You could be forgiven for thinking since we’ve moved on from radio and black-and-white TV shows/movies, that PSR isn’t as relevant as it was back in the fifties… but you’d be wrong!

Because it’s actually more powerful today than it’s ever been as PSR is STRONGER on digital platforms compared to traditional media. 💪

Up to 92% of viewers develop PSR with their preferred YouTube personalities.

The more videos you upload… the more you engage with your audience… and the more you deliver content they enjoy… the deeper your bond is with subscribers.

Celebrities have been cashing in on their fame for decades with lucrative sponsorship and advertising deals. 💵

And over the years, hundreds of studies have been conducted in a marketing context, which have conclusively proven PSR has a huge impact on sales.

So technically, it wasn’t the celebrities’ ‘fame’ that earned the deal in the first place… it was ‘their PSR’ levels (or influence) with a particular audience.

Because at the end of the day, advertisers care only about making money and the only reason they pay celebrities for their endorsement, is to boost sales.

We’ve always known this to a certain extent… because if celebs didn’t help to make sales, then they wouldn’t get paid.

It’s exactly the same for the modern influencer or content creator who grow their own audience or fanbase.

Researchers have discovered PSR + credibility makes up half the reason people buy.

But what makes it so effective is that strong PSRs create more powerful emotional connections (Lotun et al., 2024, N=3,085). 💞

In other words, your PSR connects with prospects on an emotional level – which is the key to making sales.

This is the real reason celebrities get paid fortunes to promote perfume and cars… and why influencers convert at 5% when selling random makeup. 💯

You’ve been building this relationship from the moment your first video received its first viewer, and PSR has been accumulating ever since but let’s find out…

Why It Hasn’t Helped You to Make Any Sales

PART TWO: THE BETRAYAL

This is the part everyone overlooks because they don’t know about it. No one teaches this… and regular marketers don’t have a clue it’s happening. 🦯

Why do you think so many coaches fail to make a steady income? The failure rate wouldn’t be as high as 98.8% if this was widely understood. 🤔

The only people who truly understand this secret, are the elite coaches who make $MILLIONS and have grown to celebrity status.

It’s THAT IMPORTANT!

Okay, so let’s get straight to it.

First, if you’re wondering why people haven’t figured out this ‘betrayal’ until now, well it’s pretty simple because it’s not very logical and the ‘elite’ don’t want to teach you about it… but also, the two main reasons are:

  1. It works contrary to regular marketing principles where you try boosting sales and awareness. In fact, the more you try and the more tactics you introduce, the stronger the ‘betrayal’ is felt by your audience. 😲
  2. There isn’t a single solitary study which tells us clearly that this ‘betrayal’ happens when coaches try to sell their premium offers.

In a perfect world, we would have an ‘Audience Betrayal Theory’ which reveals everything to us… but sadly, that doesn’t exist.

Instead, you have to follow the breadcrumbs over decades to see how each study feeds into the next.

So, it isn’t easy to discover unless you trace the research and connect all the dots yourself. 🧩

So, let’s follow some of the breadcrumbs right now…

INITIAL DISCOVERY

We need to go all the way back to 1976 when Judee K. Burgoon & Stephen B. Jones from the University of Arizona were studying personal space and why people react strongly when someone stands too close or too far away.

They published the paper – “Toward a theory of personal space expectations and their violations“.

The main findings were: 🔍

  • People don’t view behaviours as random – there’s an expectancy on how others should act. ✔️
  • Violation of those expectations place you in a state of ‘high alert’. ⚠️
  • A violation forces you to re-evaluate the relationship. 🤔
  • The identity of the person violating your expectations is vital to determining how ‘hurt’ you feel. 🤕
  • Negative violations to expectancy produce WORSE outcomes than if a person simply disappointed you. ❌

They confirmed their theories in a 1978 experiment (“A communication model of personal space violations: Explication and an initial test“). 👍

Over the next decade, further studies and experiments were conducted where additional findings were made, most notably:

  • Decreased friendliness caused credibility to drop (with both friends and strangers).
  • The decrease in intimacy was perceived as ‘detachment’, ‘dominance’, and resulted in a ‘separation’ of their shared similarities.
  • People interpreted it like the relationship was ending.

And in 1989, Le Poire & Burgoon actually measured people’s bodies when reacting to violations. They discovered violations don’t just upset people mentally – they trigger real physical stress responses in the body.

EVOLUTION

During the nineties it became known as ‘Expectation Violation Theory’ (EVT) and evolved from ‘personal space’ violations to ‘emotional’ through communication (that included trust, promises, betrayal, & expectations). 😮

What triggered this evolution?

Burgoon realised the mechanism she’d discovered wasn’t specific to personal space. It happened with ANY ‘expectation violation’.

In 1993, she published a paper in the Journal of Language and Social Psychology explicitly applying EVT to emotional communication and trust contexts.

Then in 1996, Le Poire & Burgoon provided physiological evidencemeasuring heart rates and stress responsesproving the mechanism worked the same way regardless of the expectation violated. 😰

The theory had successfully jumped from studying “someone standing too close” to understanding “someone breaking your trust“.

Many studies were conducted over the next 15-years, as the theory progressed and became widely accepted, but arguably the most significant (at least from our perspective) was the 1998 study by Afifi, W. A., & Metts, S. – “Characteristics and Consequences of Expectation Violations in Close Relationships. Journal of Social and Personal Relationships”.

It was the first comprehensive empirical application of EVT to trust, promises, betrayal, and relationship expectations. 🥂

In other words, it was the first time this had ever been measured, and the results were conclusive.

There were nine categories of violations tested, but the two most important to us were:

Relationship de-escalation’ – “Behaviours that signal a lack of confidence, cause trauma, or lead directly to termination of the relationship.” (BETRAYAL)

And…

Relational transgressions’ – “Violations of the relationship rules. Examples include having an affair, deception, or being disloyal.” (DIRECT BETRAYAL/BROKEN PROMISES)

What they found was:

  • Relationship de-escalation was the SECOND most important expectancy violation across all three studies
  • Relationship de-escalation was one of the three most EXPECTED violations
  • And in two of the studies ‘relationship de-escalation’ had extremely high negative ratings

IN A COMMERCIAL CONTEXT

Since the mid-2000’s, hundreds of studies have been done to see how EVT behaviour impacts commercial and marketing prospects.

These studies are filled with all the irrefutable evidence you need to be certain it’s causing your downfall.

But I can’t discuss them all here as I need to start wrapping this up, so I’ll simply highlight the four most relevant.

STUDY #1 – “The Impact of Algorithmic Price Discrimination on Consumers’ Perceived Betrayal” – Wu, Z., Yang, Y., Zhao, J., & Wu, Y. (2022)

They studied how loyal customers react when a company prioritises profit over their relationship (by charging them more than strangers).

On a betrayal scale of 1 to 7, loyal customers rated it a massive 6.25!

Proving loyalty acts like a multiplier for betrayal. 😵

Businesses/coaches with devoted audiences (strong PSR), are held to higher standards than unknown brands or personalities.

So, suddenly switching to “Sales Mode,”… violates that special bond. And because the audience are loyal, it hurts 6X MORE. 🪓

STUDY #2 – “Perspectives from Expectation Disconfirmation Theory“ – Nguyen Ngoc Hien, et al. (2024)

This study shows the effect of violating customer expectations. It focused on customers who had a bad experience with a company during the previous 6-months.

They found the overwhelming reaction to their disappointment was anger (68%), while consequences included… switching companies (52%), negative reviews (56%), complaints (47%). 💢

STUDY #3 – “The effects of a psychological brand contract breach on customers’ dysfunctional behavior toward a brand” – Gong, T., & Wang, C.-Y. (2021)

This study demonstrates what happens when brands break ‘implied’ promises.

Negative feedback increases by 157%retaliation behaviour increases by 153%… and intention to boycott increases by 122%. 💥

Which results in a substantial loss of trust and sales.

STUDY #4 – “Expectancy-disconfirmation and consumer satisfaction: A meta-analysis” (2024)

The final one I want to highlight sampled 150 separate studies and featured almost 60k consumers across multiple industries.

And rather than highlighting behaviours or expectations, I want to point out a couple of powerful comparisons it provides us with.

First – services (like coaching) have 28% STRONGER negative effects vs. physical goods. So, it’s even more devastating for service-based businesses.

Second – real-world violation effects are 35% STRONGER vs. lab simulations. Therefore, results in reality are far worse than in testing. 📈

The research is clear: when expectations are violated in relationships… trust drops, satisfaction plummets, and people feel genuinely betrayed. It’s not opinion – it’s measurable, it’s universal, and the evidence is overwhelming.

But there’s…

One Final Piece You Need to Understand

PART THREE: THE REACTION

This part is a lot easier to explain as it’s not as complicated, so this will be quick…

But don’t let that fool you because it still has a devastating effect on your offer and it contributes to your audience being angry with you, so it’s no less important.

In 1966, Jack W. Brehm from Yale University published “The attractiveness of an eliminated choice alternative” in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

He discovered that when people believe their freedom to choose is suddenly eliminated, they become motivated to recover that lost freedom.

Brehm called this ‘Psychological Reactance Theory’ (PRT).

His initial experiment asked students to listen to four recordings, then they were required to rate them in order of preference.

Students were then told they could choose ONE to take home, but Brehm informed each student that their ‘third’ choice was unavailable.

And they found the missing record INCREASED in attractiveness after it became unavailable.

The “forbidden fruit” effect – the thing you CAN’T have becomes MORE desirable.

However, they ran a second version where students had NO prior expectation of choice and in this case, the effect did NOT occur.

This proved reactance only happens when people have freedom FIRST, then lose it.

The motivational states for a person looking to ‘restore their freedom’ are as follows:

  • Direct – Doing the forbidden thing anyway (boomerang effect)
  • Increased attractiveness – Wanting the restricted option more
  • Hostility toward sourceAnger at whoever restricted you
  • Source derogationNegative perception of the person threatening your freedom

Later, a follow-up study offered children a selection of candy bars to choose from, but they were told not to choose ‘candy bar X’.

Naturally, most of the children opted for the forbidden choice… because when told what NOT to do, reactance makes you want to do it MORE.

However, PRT is about much more than simply wanting what you can’t have, which we can see from PRT studies performed in a marketing context.

STUDY #1: Assertive Ads & Committed Consumers (2017) – Zemack-Rugar, Y., Moore, S. G., & Fitzsimons, G. J.

They found that 72% of ads in top US magazines use assertive language (“Buy now!”, “Visit us!”, “Just do it!”), and this sales pressure triggered reactance which is STRONGEST with committed/loyal consumers.

Their conclusion: “Assertive ads are ineffective due to reactance. Our results show the perils that assertive ads pose for marketers and their most valuable customers.

In other words, loyal audiences react MORE negatively to sales pressure than casual followers.

STUDY #2: Pop-Up Ads & Intrusiveness (2002) – Edwards, S. M., Li, H., & Lee, J. H.

They tested pop-up ads vs banner ads and measured “perceived intrusiveness” (the feeling of being interrupted), and pop-ups rated 34% more intrusive.

Their conclusion: IntrusivenessReactanceIrritation & Avoidance.

“Perceived intrusiveness was suggested as the underlying mechanism”.

In other words, this proves that interrupting expected content with sales messages triggers reactance.

Now let’s quickly look at how all this fits together to understand…

How it Destroyed Your Sales Potential

As soon as people started watching your content on YouTube, an instant bond began to form. 😍

You were welcomed into their life and no matter how busy their day was, they always made sure to see how you were doing.

They liked your videos… they subscribed to your channel… and they kept coming back for more.

The longer this happened, and the more you helped with your amazing content… the stronger this bond became. 💪

And although the relationship is completely one-sided (since you’re unaware of their existence, but they know plenty about you)…

This is PSR in action.

The same rules apply as they would when forming a real-life friendship…

  • You see if you have things in common
  • You meet at certain places and venues
  • You do various activities together
  • You regularly discuss the same topics
  • Et cetera, et cetera…

This is how people decide whether they want to become friends… and their shared interests are like an ‘unspoken contract’ between the two parties.

But if ‘the conditions’ were to suddenly change, then you’d naturally reconsider the friendship. 🤔

Like if your friend stops having engaging conversation with you and instead starts constantly complaining about life and other people

Or if they faked their interest in opera and fine dining to meet new people but now all they wanna do is talk about heavy metal and eat baloney sandwiches

Or maybe your new friend was fun initially, but they’ve started drinking excessively… or they’re asking to borrow money every time you meet

You simply wouldn’t tolerate it. The reason you ‘accepted’ their friendship was based on specific conditions defined from your initial meetings. 🚫

And if one of you were to break those agreed ‘conditions’ then the relationship will fail because it’s not what either of you ‘signed up for’.

This is precisely what happened with your YouTube channel because it started on the premise of free content and expert guidance. 💻

Your audience thought you were amazing as you literally offered to help without asking for anything in return.

They agreed to ‘your terms’, subscribed to your channel and consumed your awesome free content, which they loved… so, they planned their life around your schedule and regularly came back for more. 📅

But then out of nowhere… weeks (or months) later… you hit them with a premium offer. 🥊

Suddenly a SALES PAGE appears out of nowhere, offering a series of $97 eBooks… a $700 course… a $10,000 service… (it doesn’t really matter what).

Because to them, this felt like a betrayal.

Like you intentionally deceived them, and it was all part of your plan to begin with. 😈

It’s not that your premium offer is making them feel this way…

It’s more about the sinking realisation that you’ve been ‘playing’ them all this time… that everything has been contrived (or fake) from the start… and ultimately, they’ve fallen into your trap like a gullible fool.

They feel manipulated like some victim of a scam, so not only will they struggle to trust you ever againthey crave justice and revenge!

This is EVT in action.

Now they’re angry and want to make you pay… 😠

They unsubscribe. They leave nasty comments. They tell others you’re a fraud.

And despite the fact your premium offer is awesome… and the only solution out there capable of helping them achieve their objective

They’re blinded by rage and feeling spiteful so there’s little chance of purchasing your offer as they’d rather fail than to give you any money.

That’s why you launched to an orchestra of “CRICKETS” 🦗 … and why 98.8% of YouTube coaches fail.

And even if they’re not feeling so angry or vindictive… the very least they’ll do is intentionally resist your offers.

This is PRT in action.

It doesn’t affect an influencer recommending random makeup… 💄
It doesn’t affect a coach with only premium content… 💎
It doesn’t affect a professional service provider… 👨‍⚕️
It doesn’t affect an eCommerce entrepreneur… 🛍️

WHY?

Because selling (or being sold to) was part of the ‘original agreement’ with their audience, therefore they’re expecting this behaviour and so betrayal is never a factor.

Think of it this way…

You’ve Just Met Someone Special

It’s clear you have a similar sense of humour… you have many shared interests… and both enjoy the same hobbies and activities. 🥰

Trust develops between the two of you while your relationship goes from strength to strength (BUILDING PSR).

Many months pass and everything seems to be going perfectly. You’re both extremely happy… however, one day your partner finds a ‘Flirty Text™’ message on your phone. 📱

They’ve never seen you behave this way before, and you never mentioned anything about wanting an ‘open relationship’. 😮

They would have NEVER AGREED to you seeing other people, so it feels sneaky like you were planning this from the very start (broken contract).

It doesn’t occur to them that you might have a reasonable explanation, or that it’s perhaps a simple misunderstanding.

Their trust in you has completely vanished now your infidelity has been discovered, so they avoid you and fiercely reject your attempts to reconnect.

It’s painful because they didn’t see it coming… they never once suspected you wanted something different… yet all this time you’ve been deceiving them like a fool. 😭

Soon the hurt turns to anger as the betrayal fuels a desire to retaliate and seek bitter revenge (EVT EFFECT).

This is why regular marketing advice has a contrary effect for YouTube coaches… and why regular marketers fail.

Implementing their marketing strategies (designed to increase sales and conversions), only infuriates your audience further because it’s like encouraging you to send ‘Flirty Text™’ messages to even MORE PEOPLE!

Which makes things worse, not better! 💣

That’s the million-dollar question (or potentially the MULTI-million-dollar question)! 😉

How do I know something only 1.2% of online coaches understand?

The ‘insider secret’ that made these elite coaches super-successful… extremely rich… and mega-famous…

A secret they NEVER SHARE with anybody.

Well… it’s a valid question that I’ll answer with 100% honesty.

DISCLAIMER:

The truth is… no one actually revealed anything to me!

Neither Tony Robbins nor any of the renowned millionaire coaches I’ve referred to, have shared a ‘secret’ with me.

Claiming so (or letting you believe I’m in on something), would be wrong and deceitful… which is something I would NEVER DO! 🚫

So, I want to be completely clear that I don’t know any of those guys personally, and I haven’t learned ‘the secret’ from one of their super-expensive seminars or 6-figure ‘mastermind’ groups etc.

I’d love nothing more than to say I spent time at Tony Robbins’ Mansion in Bali where he gave me the blueprint for his success.

Sadly though, I came across ‘the secret’ by chance… therefore my discovery story is rather mundane in comparison… lacking any glitz and glamour that would make it an exciting tale…

Long story short… it was a huge success, and Ed was blown away! 🏆
